Happy Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

There is nothing more annoying than the Tutti Frutti Granola Boy Francis. People so don't understand the depths of St. Francis, he was so pure and beautiful interiorly that even the animals came to him with perfect freedom.   St. Francis embraced and wed Lady Poverty.  True spiritual poverty is one of detachment so that our one and only attachment is God Himself.

Ok... I'm sorry but this is weird...............

I was going to say "That's odd" but I've had days like that so I merely laughed right out loud.  I don't know but that I would probably entitle it, "St. Francis meets Picasso"

World Dairy Expo

Today I took almost 1/2 my ruffians to the World Dairy Expo.  Not exactly my kind of fun but sometimes we do things for our children.  And I will admit, it was enjoyable as there were some 75 people from one of our homeschooling groups.  And, it was interesting.
So you ask, what happened to Pippin's eye. In a normal family you'd hear perhaps "Johnny threw a rock" or or something normal.  When I asked what happened Sam told me, "Poppy took a pin from the chopper and threw it at him."  (what was she doing with a pin from a piece of a farm machinery?!)
They had a neat exhibit set up with people vs cow food. It was actually quite interesting.
The cotton part intrigued me. I am used to "up north" type cows and they don't eat cotton.... that I know of.  I suppose it must be the "down south" cows that eat cotton? I didn't want to show my ignorance so I didn't ask.   :D  So I asked after I posted... *chuckle*  it's not uncommon for farmers to feed their cows cotton seed because the seed is fattening.  Remember, I never said I was a farmer!
Cows also eat candy throw aways.  Like if a machine breaks in a candy shop they now sell the bad pieces to farmers. I knew this as our last (rental) home we'd find chocolate bars in the feed.  I don't know how much candy fodder my littles ate back in "them days". haha

Now, I will admit that these were pretty cows.  They were all sleek and shaven and just shiny nice.
These ones with the gray "shadows" around the black spots I thought particularly pretty.

The milking parlor.  What made me laugh was that my boys were interested in this as if they don't milk a cow every night.
The kids were able to stick their thumbs in the "milker thingies" to feel the suction. (I'm not a farmer so my lingo is a bit ... off.)
They spent much time shaving and primping the cows.  My kids were intrigued with the tails as they were shaved down and then a big fluffle was left at the bottom.
This antic just cracked me up.

It took 2 to take the cows for a walk. One lead the cow, the other carried the "bed pan" No joke, they would catch the *ahem* droppings. The place was quite clean. Just the same Pippin managed to not realize the wheelbarrows full of hay were only covering the cow plops that had been picked up. So he managed to slather himself in manure.  Surprised?  Me neither.
After our tour we watched the cow judging.  I learned something.  They will super-glue the udders shut so the milk doesn't drip out because a full udder was to be highly prized.  Really?

Sometime, somewhat recently we went on the annual Shakespeare homeschooling field trip. (Read:  get to see a great Shakespeare production for cheap)  This year it was to 12th Night.  This theater does an awesome job (professional).
Some have asked (at least locally) about our battery storage system. We had some batteries go bad, but in case you wondered, here are 2 of said batteries.  I'm not very good at describing our system but in simple terms, these store the excess solar (and wind) energy.  And yes, our house runs just like anyone else's... with electricity... we just are probably better at conserving than your average family of 13. :D
Rarely do I get to take a nap, that's usually my Sunday afternoon enjoyment.  This past Sunday I was deep in slumberland when Sam came in to show me this "Walking Stick". It doesn't take long for a woman to wake up from a deep sleep when there is a bug in her face. I think I screamed.  Then of course Sam dropped it.  But just the same now that I get to see the picture, it's pretty neat... so long as it stays out of my bed!!
We have turned into a sort of Hobbit-Shakespeare connundrum around here.  My children are getting rather disappointed in me as I haven't been generous in letting them wear these outfits to... oh... say... Mass.
Ok, so I got the baby a cute pair of boots... they weren't meant to go with this outfit.... if indeed it is an outfit. I think it is more of a "get-up"

Feast of St. Therese the Little Flower

The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away the perfume of the little violet or the delightful simplicity of the daisy.  If all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wild flowers. And so it is in the world of souls, Jesus' garden. Perfection consists in doing His will, in being what He wills us to be.
St. Therese the Little Flower
Story of a Soul

*Her feast is Oct 1st in the new calendar and Oct 3rd in the old calendar... I'm fine celebrating twice :)

Not-So-Harsh-Words Afterall

As seen in a bulletin:  (these were written by a priest, not by me... I just thought it was awesome)

Some people complain and say: Father uses harsh language.

I say: Not as harsh as the brutal baby-slaughtering metal instruments used to murder 10,000 babies every Saturday.

If someone wants to complain about harsh, let them complain about that.

We have not used harsh language, and 56,000,000+ babies have been slaughtered. We are way overdue.

There is NO SUCH THING as being "Catholic for Choice." You cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion, nor can you support those who are, with your funding or your vote. You certainly are free to support or vote for someone such as this, just as you are free to choose eternal damnation. However, if you support or vote for anyone so utterly evil, turn in your Catholic card at the door, and your Christian card too, because, de facto, you are neither Catholic nor Christian.

Support the slaughter of innocents, to your eternal damnation.

(No mincing of words there!!)

Happy Feast Day Guardian Angels

Today is a very special feast day for all of us!  It's the Feast of our Guardian Angels.  I wonder how we ever feel lonely when we have a messenger sent from God with us every moment!  I received a beautiful (group) email from a priest and I would like to share his thoughts on celebrating with our Guardian Angel:

When God assigned an angel to us, the angel had to give his consent. When angels choose something, they choose it all the way to the end without ever changing. Angels are not wishy-washy in any way. That is why devils can never repent and the good angels can never sin. They are fixed permanently in their choice. When our angel said yes to God, he willed to be ours forever...come what may! What an angel wills, he loves too. Thus, our angels love us unto the end. What a lesson for us. We should be angelic in our choices for the good...that is, we should embrace the good that God wills for us without ever compromising or changing our mind...come what may! Thus, it would be a good day to renew our baptismal vows as if we were angels... We should renew or marriage vows as if we were angels...unto the end, come what may!

I would also like to here mention St. Michael as I did not post about him on his Feast Day on Saturday and he is a favorite.

We all know the story... or should... but the only thing I will point out by way of a little reflection is what he is holding in his left hand.  Let's ask ourselves, "Just supposing I were the little soul between St. Michael and Lucifer... how would I weigh?"  Heavy with sin or light with virtue?  Am I burdened with the weight of the world, worries, fears, sins or am I fighting those things with a double edged sword and lightening my burdens?  "My yoke is easy and My burden light."

Dwarves

One of Those Days

Today was one of those days.  So much so that I'm almost too weary to bother telling a bit of the story.  Frodo was to serve Mass this morning so we left along with Merry and Pippin. Mind you our TLM is at 6:30am.  AT 6:15 we ran out of gas all of 1-1/2 miles from the Church.  I know... who runs out of gas in the 21st century?!  Do you think I had my cell phone? Oh no of course not.  So I said, "Frodo... run!" (he didn't make it in time run though he did)  The rest of us weren't about to run.  I probably would have had a heart attack.  But I did think of my friend Lady Modesty's excercise plan and think she'd be proud of my walking pace this morning.  We still had a good part of the country block to go when a nice man recognized us and stopped anyway to give us a ride.  You know, the uncanny part of it is that 20 years ago same said nice man came to the rescue when I got a flat tire outside his house ... at 5am on my way to the airport.  I'm expecting that in 20 years he'll come to my aid again.  I'd like to keep the tradition going.

Thankfully my MIL goes to Mass in the morning as well so she was able to take me to the gas station where I could buy a 2 gallon gas can for $11 to fill with $7 worth of gas.  I was a little excited to have my very own cute gas can and it was going to stay in my car... just in case.  Of course it leaked the entire way back to my car.  Then we couldn't for the life of us figure out how to get the gas out of this cute little can which was losing its cuteness quickly.   When all else fails read the directions.   Do you know, you have to pop the middle out of the cap, don't they have machines to do that these days?   Then insert the tube. But the gas would not come out.   When all else fails read the directions..... again.  However it would be impossible to explain the maneuvering it took. We get the thing in and eventually push hard enough at a very awkward angle and it starts to fill.   Then it stops filling (though it was still 1/2 full... (even if it was a 1/2 empty kind of day).  I kid you not that we could not get this thing out of the gas-filling hole. My suggestion was to just leave it there, drive off and it would probably fall off somewhere.  I am quite sure this was invented by a man with women in mind. I bet to this very day he is still laughing his fool head off.

The day didn't get much better as it wore on.  But this is plenty long and it was only 7:35.
