Hunting Orcs Among Other Goings On

Just a random picture thought.
Eleanor showing off a craft project she completed that someone gave her as a gift. (something is drastically wrong with that sentence!)

Let's hunt some orc!

What you cannot get in the post are the sound effects

If you can handle Bilbo the Orc Slayer, see dramatic video below. It's not for the faint of heart, afterall... he is three.

The new middle child seems to like wine... the new middle child must be "Nobody Did It"
For the paranoid at heart read the fine print... it's only non-alcoholic red grape juice cocktail. A little something I got for the little priests among us.

I don't know what the point is to this picture.

Christmas and the Martyrs

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce
Christ came for one reason... to die. It is no wonder that the first three days after Christmas Day are dedicated to the 3 types of Martyrs.
December 26 - The Feast of St. Stephen - Martyrdom of Blood
[And Stephen said] "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you are forever opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it." When they heard these things, they became enraged and ground their teeth at Stephen. But filled with the Holy Spirit, he gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I See the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord, Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he died. (Acts 7.51-60)

December 27 - Holy Innocents - Martyrdom of the Innocent and Pure of Heart
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. . . My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1 John 1. 5-9, 2.2)
The Flight into Egypt
It would be remiss to skip over the Flight into Egypt alongside the Martyrdom of the Holy Innocents.
Now after they (the Magi) had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. (St. Matthew 2.13-16)
December 28 - St. John the Evangelist - White Martyr in Exile
The Poisoned Cup of St. John stems from the miracle story when St. John blessed the poison in a cup of wine intended for him to consume. The poison was transformed into a serpent. He was also thrown in a cauldron of boiling oil where he was miraculously preserved from death. The title of martyr was given him by the Church Fathers, who say that it was fulfilled what Christ had foretold, that he should drink of His chalice.

Baking Challenge Week 6

This is week 6 of the Baking Challenge with Lady Modesty. This week we made the Love Krandse (Danish) on page 31 of the Farmer's Wife Baking Cookbook. We definitely get the ugly award for presentation but these were absolutely delicious! They taste just like the ol' Lorna Doone cookies but softer. I would definitely not call it a danish! But a crisp shortbread. The flavor was terrific. We made some dipped in the egg/sugar and some without. I preferred it without the egg/sugar. I'm going to make this a cookie-keeper.

Plan Your Garden

I just ran across a link at Lady Modesty's Blog... an interactive way to plan your Square Foot garden.

Check it out! They have pre-planned gardens as well. I always get the beautiful garden award in my imagination at this time of year.

Mass Behaviour

Someone asked me a question recently that made me laugh right out loud and will probably get a priest or two or more to laugh as well, "How do you get your children to behave so well during Mass?" Anyone who knows us well will know that my children are not angels. I used to leave Mass in absolute tears especially when I only had 3 or 4 children. Things are much better now but my children are still exceedingly human. If you want to understand fallen human nature, take a handful of children to church and try training them. As I often say, "Sundays ceased to be a day of rest once we had children."
*
It's always nice to see an angelic soul during Mass but that is not the role of the parents to play that angelic role and then expect the children to just "follow the example". Of course I have never looked angelic so I don't know that part from experience. Back when I was a counsellor at a summer program at my college us counsellors behaved during Mass but the teens under our care were wild. The Dean of Students pulled us counsellors aside and said, "You know, you all look great during Mass but the kids are all over the place. You need to train them." and she proceeded to tell us all of the misdemeanors they were committing. This bit of information stuck with me, though when training my own children it is far more difficult, constant and exasperating than getting an older child to sit still. My goal on this earth is to get to Heaven but I also want to take my husband and my children with me. That means training them. (well, the children anyway!) Saintly means doing our duty in all things which our vocation entails which means our holiness is found in training our children. Easier said than done of course.
*
I think everyone can understand when a baby gets cranky and squirmy and is promptly taken out but to be distracted by a whole family the size of ours, for example, will drive people from the Church!!! The old adage "Children should be seen and not heard" has it's merit during Mass but also children shouldn't be seen running and jumping around like they are at the playground. Our duty is to train our children. This might mean mom and dad can't use a missal (I promise you, eventually you will get to use one again!) Don't be afraid to put your missal down to tend to the baby or toddler entirely. You can read the readings at home. Grace isn't a feeling of holiness, the grace is there even when we don't feel it. We probably earn more graces by doing our duty than by looking externally pious. I assure you, babies and toddlers (and older more untrained children) won't follow your parental angelic behaviour. The idea of "being the example" just doesn't work with children during Mass, you have to actively train them. I promise if you do you will reap the benefits and actually someday get to use your missal again.
*
So I will mention what has worked for us, a large family, trying to keep in mind consideration for others during Mass. And again, keep in mind that we are not an angelic family, we are chuck full of fallen human nature.
*
First, we sit in 2 rows and not 2 full rows giving children room to run around, we sit close together on 1/2 of the rows. You can't reach 12 feet away from you without making a scene but you can reach straight ahead of yourself without causing too much distraction to those around you. Just put the diaper bag at the mid-section of the pew in front of you if your children are wanderers. Don't go past the bag. And then just don't let them. And how you mandate that is a family particular which you need to figure out yourself.
*
Second, practice at home. Say the family rosary or decade and work your way up and have the children sit/kneel still. I know all about the family rosary-zoo but it is great training grounds. Practice, practice, practice.
*
Third, have consequences. Poor behaviour earns nothing. If they don't behave they don't get the Sunday privileges. No dessert, no special game, no special movie, no nuthin'. During our years of traveling 95 miles one way to Mass we brought a special dessert/snack those who didn't behave didn't get any. The benefit to this is that there is more for the parents :D Of course I'd rather take less an have church angels. Whatever works for your family. What works for one won't always work for another because of the different charismas/characters.
*
Fourth, stay in Church. There is no reason all the children can't go potty right before Mass and then sit through. I'll let you in on a secret, they just want to do something more fun than sitting still so they come up with the bathroom run. I tested this myself, I simply said, "no" well, they didn't go for 2 more hours sometimes. Children don't generally go to the bathroom every 20 minutes at home they don't need to go during Mass. Just say no. End of conversation. I've never had a child wet his pants yet because of it.
*
Fifth, don't be afraid to be the parent training your children. If a child makes noise more than a few second take them out but not out to run somewhere else. Hold them in a corner or somewhere very uninteresting. I know all about the most obstinent children afterall Aragorn spent 4 YEARS out back with Frodo!!
*
Sixth, no distractions. No food, no drinks, no toys. No books until they can handle them. Make the littles sit and be quiet. The distractions only encourage them to play fetch, to make demands. My children tend to be very physcially active so this was a big one for us. Don't be afraid to sit all through Mass with the baby/toddler on your lap. That is your piety. If they are still and quiet when you sit, then sit, they are being trained. They need to learn to have times of being quiet and still so they can learn to pray. Mass is one of those times to pray, so for babies/children their prayer is just being still.
*
Seventh, if your children are unruly don't bless the whole parish with a chance to practice patience, it doesn't work. It aggrevates and distracts people. Just sit in the back until they are trained. Yes, it may seem more ideal to sit in the front with children but if your children don't behave it is entirely inconsiderate to sit up front for all the souls at church there to pray to be distracted by unruly children. If the behaviour isn't ideal then it isn't ideal to sit for all to suffer through!
*
I can say that most of the time my children behave, though with so many children you can bet there will be at least one who will test. And I do have Pippin who has ants in his pants. But, I can take them to a 6:30am Mass by myself and sit in the front and usually not distract the entire church. My family will probably never be the family with not a hair out of place and always facing front and being the angelic family of the year but most of the time we do alright.
*
Be encouraged, it is much easier with the younger ones when you have older ones. The littles will follow their lead as they do look up to them. That is natural. So train up your oldest ones or you will rue the day.

Merry Christmas

Oh Happy Fault That Won for Us Such a Babe Lying in a Manger!

Big Bird hung, dressed and strung... ready to pop into the oven at 5:15 am. Since I woke up at 5:07 without an alarm I put it in a little early and skipped the preheating.

I wonder why people worry about getting expensive play houses for their children (we do have 2 but one was a grand hand-made gift and the other was free for the picking-up) when a card table will do. I don't know how many times we put on the table cloth but it wasn't once. Poppy would yank it down and say, "Bye!"

Please note, there is a child with a broom in this picture. But notice it is not touching the floor.

She's not heavy, she's my brute sister.
Not only did I indirectly take a cock-eyed picture it re-rotated itself on this blog.
The Nativity was all set when Baby Jesus arrived. Of course it is beside the point that we forgot to bring up our big Baby Jesus since someone was borrowing our manger for a Christmas pageant. But He's coming! This is why there are 12 days of Christmas. Eventually everything is in it's proper place.

Big Bird cooking away. It turned out very moist and yummy. Methinks I will be cooking turkeys for dinner not lunch so as to be able to cook it at the more reasonable times of the day but it was worth it. Carcass will be made into soup tomorrow. And I can hardly wait for the cold turkey sandwich. YUM!

This is a no-reason picture except that I always chuckle when I see St. Michael slaying the dragon above the fire-of-hell.
The following are all the sections of our Nativity Set which you may go ahead and call my obsession. Of course one can hardly call a once-a-year set-up an obsession but I do enjoy adding to our collection each year. My mother has also added to our collection.
The Wine Shop

The Inn where there was no room.

The Town Well

The Fishing Shack and the Pond

This year we found a bigger stable at the last minute.

The 3 Kings' Tents.

Galadriel.
Christmas Day is devoted to Baby Jesus and Family & Friends. However, we do a few little things for their stockings. This year it was water bottles (I mean the Klean Kanteen kind, not bottles of water) If you can believe I found 10 different colors. Toothbrushes and a few little things the kids picked out or made.

Poppy noticed everyone else had a stocking and a much coveted water bottle and she went round and round looking for hers.

And here is what I found in my stocking. $5 (Eowyn always gives away her money), some pictures, a bookmark, Frodo made giant sacrifice beads (I took the hint I should be making some big sacrifices) and some little chicks.

We invited 11 guests. Large families are always looking to grow a little larger. The children washed all the China that hasn't been used in ages and decided to use every last piece. It was pretty and they loved setting it up.

The centerpiece(s)
The grown up table.
The little ladies' table.
Aragorn carving Big Bird.
A view from above.

Our little tradition used to be to get our Christmas Tree the 4th Sunday of Advent but one year Christmas was a couple days after that to which we couldnt' find a single tree so we went to Menards and found this 12 foot Christmas Tree (ornaments are always welcome haha) Since not too many people buy 12 foot Christmas Trees the day before Christmas we got quite a deal. We ended up really liking a fake Tree, something which seemed to be an abomination in my past life.

I would like to share something with you. This is not Pippy Longstocking with her braids cut off, this is Pipping. And so you ask, what happened to his face. If you take colored tinsel, namely red tinsel, it pops off into millions of bits of glitter which my 3 stooges got all over the place in the time it took us to say good-bye to our wonderful guests. Showers, soap, microfiber doesn't work on glitter. Just so you know.
We are now off to Grandma and Grandpa's for food 'n fun 'n photos.
Merry Christmas!

Christmas Menu

Our Meal Plan:
I have never made a real turkey. My husband has cooked one in a turkey boiler. My husband has cooked on in an infrared thing-a-ma-jigger. But I've never made a real live (well... dead) turkey. So this was my plan. You know, you invite 11 guests to go alongside our 12 family members so you really want to try your patience and cooking skills. (Note to self: when we finish our "work" kitchen put labels on every cupboard and cabinet, I would like someone to explain to me why the 2 pieces of the "shield" for the mixer would be in 2 separate places, one in a cabinet and another in a drawer.... I seem to do alot of talking to myself, now I'm blogging to myself... )

Appetizer(s):
Hummus with Tortilla Chips
(nixed the Veggies and Dip when we ran out of the veggies after stuffing the turkey, making a salad and so on)
(nixed the Veggie Pizza when the 2 youngest (perhaps some of the olders) tore off large slabs of the crust and we ran out of cream cheese.... whodda thunk we'd use some 12 - 8 oz boxes?!)

Lunch:
Turkey (followed recipe from Simply Recipes for Mom's Roast Turkey)
Gravy (followed my Mom's recipe, though I've yet to add drippings from the pan)
Stuffing (followed a recipe from All Recipes for Old Fashioned Stuffing... my SIL makes the best stuffing... just FYI.. my stuffing seems a bit mushy)
Spiral Ham
Cheesy Green Bean Casserole (I never was a fan of this stuff but after altering the recipe a little and adding cheese... it is tolerable... it seems to be a Wisconsin thing)
Spinach Casserole (this is our own recipe, simple, delicious way to eat spinach)
Roasted Red Peppers (I grew to love these after having them at someone's house!)
Lettuce Salad with carrots, radishes, red peppers, green peppers, cheese and an oil/vinegar sweet dressing
Cranberry Sauce
Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes (wishing I had added shredded cheddar cheese)
Cranberry-Orange Jello Salad
Rolls and Butter (thought I should mention the butter in case Alice in WI reads this :) Of course the butter dish... the glass one... rolled out of the fridge and on to the floor in a gazillion pieces

Desserts:
Cheesecake with Cherries
Lemon Cheesecake
Peppermint Blizzard Pie (Lisa brought that)

Drinks:
Hot Cranberry Tea
Wine (from Spain-where-they-really-know-how-to-handle-tough-vintage)
Apple Juice (for those of us who aren't tough-vintage....)
Water
Milk

We spent about 4 hours preparing food... I had great helpers so it made the prep work go very quickly. We transformed our van into a refrigerator. Stay tuned for the reality show tomorrow.

We are attending Midnight Mass and will probably get home about 2am and I have to get up at 5:15am to get big bird into the oven. I am going to admit I got a big bird.... 24 pounds and let me tell you it is big because they are very uncoorperative and don't support themselves when you try and pick them up to dress them. Not quite as bad as bathing a newborn for the first time but fairly close.... the turkey doesn't holler at you!

For Christmas Dinner we will be going to Aragorn's family's house so that will be a very yummy meal.
